Mining legal arguments in court decisions

Abstract Identifying, classifying, and analyzing arguments in legal discourse has been a prominent area of research since the inception argument mining field. However, there major discrepancy between way natural language processing (NLP) researchers model annotate court decisions experts understand analyze argumentation. While computational approaches typically simplify into generic premises claims, usually exhibit rich typology that is important for gaining insights particular case applications law general. We address this problem make several substantial contributions to move field forward. First, we design new annotation scheme proceedings European Court Human Rights (ECHR) deeply rooted theory practice argumentation research. Second, compile large corpus 373 (2.3M tokens 15k annotated spans). Finally, train an outperforms state-of-the-art models NLP domain provide thorough expert-based evaluation.
